Church leaders, theologians, and theological educators are increasingly engaging the topic of trauma in recent history, especially since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. While a significant body of research has illuminated our current understanding of the psychological and physiological impact of trauma upon an individual, less attention has been placed on the impact of trauma on one’s spiritual life. This 90-minute workshop will examine the impact of trauma on one’s spiritual life through the lens of spiritual formation, psychology, and Christian leadership. Though our conversation will begin with research, we will utilize research as a launching point for personal reflection and practical application for contexts such as congregational leadership as well as individual and group spiritual direction.
