Mosaic Formation will be partnering with Diaspora Network for their fourth annual conference in Houston, Texas. The conference’s specific focus will be on immigrant and multiethnic church planting and multiplication. We seek to join God in what He is already doing: by coming around and supporting diaspora church multiplication leaders and movements, learning from them, and developing unique training and multiplication incubators for these demographics around the country.
Houston is arguably the most international and diverse city in the U.S. Nearly 1 in 4 Houstonians are foreign-born and just under 50% of children are diaspora next generation having at least 1 immigrant parent.38% of the area’s 7.5 million residents are Hispanic/Latinooverpassing the less than a quarter white residents. A quick Google search reveals over 20 Nigerian RCCG churches in southwest Houston, and there are easily 40 South Asian churches throughout the city. Unreached people groups include the Rohingya from Myanmar, Punjabi Sikhs from India, and Pashto speakers from Afghanistan.
In his book Prophetic City, Klineberg argues that Houston (speaking specifically about immigration patterns) is at the center of the rapid changes that are redefining the nature of American society itself. Houston is where we can see the future of North American cities emerging. We believe this is also the case for the immigrant church and thus the future of the Church in North America more broadly.
